Restaurant Review: Cookfellas, Guisborough

In Guisborough a small market town, situated on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moor. There’s a little restaurant called Cookfellas. Ran by a local lady, she has created a popular restaurant offering foods like steak, burgers, stews and curry. Now in the new location, re the old pub the Highland Laddie with a bright friendly atmosphere. Last weekend I visited this restaurant with four friends.

Arriving into the restaurant we had a corner table, with booths and chairs and brightly coloured table top. Handed the main menu, shown the wine menu, the cocktail and the special board a hard decision was to be made.

First it was a drink. The day was hot and muggy, I wanted something refreshing. I opted to go for a Mojito a sensible choice, but one which cannot be enjoyed without a shot of gold tequila. Others had a frozen daiquiri mocktail, Gin and Orange and what could only be described as a week pimms (well to me!).

Next it was food… to start with we had smashed avocado and nachos, Indian cured gravadlax and sea salt and chilli chicken wings. The wings were delicious, nice and crispy with a mild spice to it. The nachos, however were criticised by my friends to need more chilli in it. The gravadlax was smooth with a not overpowering Indian aroma to it.

For mains we chose two burgers, pork belly and steak. I chose a bad boy burger which included halloumi cheese, smashed avocado, skinny chips and coleslaw! The burger was overdone and very filling as I could not finish my dish off. However the original Cookafella burger (posh cheeseburger) could be finished.  The pork belly was tender and fell off the bone, with fluffy mashed potato and a lemon and thyme sauce. The steak was well cooked with a mustard and whisky sauce and skinny fries.

Overall I thought the food was delicious, very filling and definitely kept me going all night. The restaurant was bright and colourful, although it was busy you didn’t feel on top of the other guests. The service was attentive and quick, very accommodating when we said we were on a tight schedule. As I’ve been living in the south, I thought it was great value for money. Would definitely go again, even more if they sold Parmos!!
