Five British TV Christmas specials
I love a good TV Christmas special. Settling down in front of the TV after a big Christmas dinner. Some of them are my favourites to watch every year. It doesn’t matter how many times you see them they never get old.
My favourite to watch at least 10 times each year is Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special. It’s such a classic that it makes me laugh more and more every year. Has some classic scenes, like the opening with Smithy and Gavin singing Band Aid. Pamela and Nessa wanting a fight. Marks and Spencer scene with the thong, Nessa and Smithy moment and any scene with baby Neil.
The Royle Family did a Christmas special called the New Sofa was hilarious. First day is in the Royle household watching tele and the second is at Daves house. It’s totally a chalk and cheese classic but they capture it hilariously. I love The Royle Family show especially for Jim and Nana.
Dinner ladies was two series show but much loved by me. The episode named Christmas is amazing when Bren is surprised by Tony. What I love the most about it is the brass band playing. I love hearing brass band music at Christmas because of Salvation Army. It touches a nerve to me. The way Tony surprises Bren especially with the etch-a-sketch.
Another Christmas special I love is The Christmas Lunch Incident from The Vicar of Dibley. This is the episode where Geraldine is invited to have four Christmas dinners and brings Spice Girls into church. It’s hilarious and one I remember watching as a kid.
A new one that I love is the Christmas episodes from Call the Midwife. I think it’s the simplicity of the show. The cubs performing a nativity. Making paper snowflakes. The Christmas food and family of the show. My mum loves this show so it’s a popular choice in my house. I don’t care I love it (except when they give birth!)
Apart from Gavin and Stacey another Christmas TV episode I can watch over and over is Downton Abbey. Now I know they’ve had a few Christmas specials over the years. Some stick in my mind like Bates returning, Carson and Mrs Hughes get together, they go to Brancaster Castle and Lady Edith’s wedding. For me I love when Matthew proposes to Lady Mary outside in the Snow. It’s every girl dream. I do think it’s the best drama Christmas special.
Whatever the show is be the best Christmas specials are the ones you can go back and watch it again and again. I know for some it’s watching Only Fools and Horses special. I think it’s funny it’s not a favourite.
